The OE house is a montage. The clients wanted a double house, which permitted them to move from one half to the other depending on their mood. The architects proposed using two well-known models of domestic space: the open plan of the Case Study Houses for hedonistic pleasures in the warm summer months, covered by the existentialist interiors of Le Corbusier’s Maison Jaoul for the windy months in the Sierra de la Mussara. This was accomplished literally. The departure points for the design were a typological investigation of local rural constructions and the invention of a seasonal membrane that could be reconfigured depending on changes in the weather. Learning form neighbouring constructions, the resulting building is a cross between an agricultural storehouse and a mas, or a Catalan farmhouse. The house transcends its two schizophrenic uses, creating multiple environments depending on the weather and the mood of its inhabitants. The OE, who lived across the street, spent every evening on the construction site.

The final configuration of the pavilion responds largely to the quick response exercised during the project. A design system was generated that on the one hand would be sufficiently flexible to assume the inevitable changes that occur during construction and, on the other hand, would have a strong and unequivocal character, insuring that the personality of the building would not suffer due to changing circumstances in the future. The pavilion delimits a square area in plan measuring 11 by 11 meters, at the border between a dense copse of pines and a carefully groomed lawn, on the same site as a former pavilion from the 1950s, which was demolished in 2011. The geometric order of this “field” is heir to previous projects designed by this studio. The pavilion is organized into six strips, which are parallel to the axis that leads from the pines towards the lawn. This layout is reflected in the slab that supports the floor, which is perforated at points to permit plantings. Small white brick boxes, independent of the structure and reminiscent of the former building, house the more specific program functions.

The site is irregular, with a break at its midpoint, which slopes down towards the house. This level change is used as a way to relate/separate the two parts of the program. The swimming pool is placed on the upper platform and the annexes are located on the lower platform. Since the design requirements included two distinct zones, the double portico + level change provides good climatic characteristics for both uses. In this aspect the existing trees and the new arbour are especially important, as they provide shelter from the wind and shade the dining and preparation areas.

The main influence in this project is the site; without which it is impossible to understand the design. It is located at the edge of a peripheral neighbourhood in Pamplona. Given the extreme conditions of the surroundings and the program characteristics, two primary design goals were determined: the logic of where to locate the building program elements and the need to capture daylight, which took precedence over any other more complex or exuberant approach. With this strategy the project reappropriates the place, preventing the rough aesthetic of the surroundings from undermining the new building. Its condition as a base for the adjacent buildings unaffectedly assumes the presence of the unfinished rear facades of the housing blocks. As a result, the surrounding buildings are inextricably incorporated into the landscape of the new building.

The temporary building forms part of the provisional public space installed in the plaza de las Glorias of Barcelona. The program includes an information area, an exhibition space explaining the project for transforming the plaza and a bike rental service. Given the large-scale of the adjacent buildings, this project proposes a linear element with a building envelope that blurs its outline to minimize its presence. The intention is that the building doesn’t compete, but rather melts into its surroundings and that it is permeable to transit, views and air. Three envelopes with differentiated functions are combined to form a certain depth, which is visible especially at night when an artificial light source is located at floor level between the polycarbonate layer and the shade netting. Both layers take advantage of the diffusion qualities of the material, and in addition to producing two radiant surfaces, the interstitial space is also illuminated. Through light, the void acquires presence, adding the successive envelopes together to form a whole: a halo of light. At nightfall, the light gravitates like a line that underlines the building. At night, the light ascends to occupy the interstitial space and complete the halo. The building, permeable to passers-by, views and air, more than occupying a space, densifies a void.
